Christmas is a season full of music – one of the things I love the most about the season is all the music. And one thing I look forward to is learning new music for the special services in which I’ll get to participate. If you’re trying narrow down the choices, I’d like to give you a few suggestions to help you choose the right song for this wonderful Christmas season.
First of all, if you are searching for a song for your church’s Christmas service, choose a song that focuses on Jesus. There are a lot of songs played this time of year that are holiday songs and songs about winter weather. And, as fun as these songs are, they really aren’t Christmas songs. Choose a song that proclaims the truth of Christmas – the glorious birth of our Savior Jesus, His great love for us, and the salvation that is ours through Him.
Secondly, view your song as your gift to the Lord – as a special gift of worship and praise that you have prepared for Him from your heart. Find one that speaks to your heart and lift it up to Him.
And thirdly, find a song that challenges you a bit musically. I love to find those types of songs. Sometimes, we musicians get a little too comfortable with our abilities and coast along by singing the same style song over and over again. Stretch yourself a little and choose a song that will take a little work to learn. Hebrews 13:15 says, “Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.” (ESV)
Take that verse to heart as you choose your song to for the special Christmas services at your church. Choose a song that you can lift up to God as a sacrifice of praise, the fruit of your lips acknowledging, lifting up and praising the name of Jesus. It will be worth the effort and will be the perfect song for you for this Christmas season.
