Yours is a High Calling

Did you know that as a singer in the Lord’s service you have a very high calling? You have been appointed by the King of Kings to sing!

Recently, I was reminded of this fact when I attended a Bible conference filled with amazing music and strong teaching from God’s Word. Arriving at the opening night of the conference, I was tired from traveling and spent from a full week of work. I sat down as the music began. Song after song bathed over me, and before I knew it, all of the junk from the week had washed away. I was in the presence of the Lord. God was using musicians living up to their calling.

I was also reminded of the importance that music has in our worship of God, in our study of His Word, and the importance of being faithful to serve the Lord with the musical gifts He’s given. Indeed, it is a high calling.

The Old Testament is full of examples of music preceding the reading of The Law. The New Testament encourages us to minister to each other with songs. Colossians 3:16 talks about “teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.” Why is that? Music has a way of cutting through to the heart and touching a need and of breaking down walls for us to truly hear and receive God’s Word.

Now, all this may be true, but you may be so bogged down in life that you don’t feel you have the time to commit to a music ministry. Perhaps, you sing all the time. However, you don’t feel you’re accomplishing anything for the Kingdom or that you have any type of high calling. I’ve had those same thoughts, but this I know to be true: We are responsible for what we do with what God has given us. And, when we take a step of faith, He faithfully takes care of the details.

So, if you have been scheduled to sing and are feeling a bit ho-hum about it, or if you feel like God is calling you into the music ministry, and you have hesitated, let me encourage you. God has appointed you to use your voice to sing for His glory. The songs you sing will help prepare the hearts of the audience to hear and receive God’s Word. God may use your music to do a mighty work in someone’s heart.

Don’t get discouraged; don’t lay down your musical gift for a lesser pursuit. Answer the call. Get involved in the music ministry. Choose your next song and be prepared for the next opportunity. Live up to the calling you have received and commit that voice to the Lord’s service. You have received a high calling! You are a singer for the King of Kings!
