Sing for Freedom

Summer is finally here! School is out and family vacation is fast approaching. The biggest summer holiday, July 4th, is right around the corner and for most of us that means grilling out with friends, pool parties and beach trips – fun ways to celebrate a holiday.

July 4th, Independence Day, is a day set aside for the celebration of our freedom. As we celebrate that freedom, remember those courageous men and women who bravely fought for and protected that freedom and have given their lives for that purpose. Freedom is precious and it is costly.

As believers in Jesus Christ, that statement takes on a whole new meaning doesn’t it?

Christ has set us free through His sacrificial death on the cross. Our freedom was costly. Our freedom is complete. God’s Word speaks clearly on the freedom that is offered in Christ. Galatians 5:1 says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” (ESV) and Galatians 5:13 says, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (ESV) Praise God!

As His Beloved, we are called to freedom. And with that freedom comes responsibility – don’t misuse or abuse it. 1 Peter 2:16 says, “Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God.” (ESV) In our freedom we have the awesome privilege of living in service to our God.

Those wonderful musical gifts that you’ve been given, you can use for Him as you live in service to the Lord. Enjoy the freedom that is yours in Christ and use what He’s given you to live in service to Him. I love the phrase in that old hymn “Take My Life And Let It Be” that says, “Take my voice and let me sing, always, only for my King. Always, only for my King!”

Now, speaking of freedom – many churches around the US have special July 4th services to honor the men and women who have served and are serving in our country and to celebrate the freedom that we enjoy in our country and the freedom that is ours in Christ. If you’ve been asked in sing on or around July 4th here are a few song choices to consider.
