Goal-Setting in Your Music Ministry

Are you a goal-setter? Do you have the ability to think far ahead and make plans for the future? How about with your music ministry? Do you set goals for yourself within your ministry? If so, do you pray about these goals before you set them?

Admittedly, I’m not a good goal setter, but I’ve thought about this this recently. There is one goal that I should always have in mind – following His plan. Perhaps you’re just getting started in the music ministry, and you have all kinds of plans for what you’d like to do. You want to set some goals and make some headway.

Some time ago, I talked with a young musician who shared with me her plans and dreams for singing on differing stages. She had been given the opportunity to sing at her school and at a few small churches. Her desire was to stand on bigger stages with bigger audiences singing about the love of Jesus to as many as possible. And, she was setting goals to get there.

You may be able to relate to her. You may find yourself having the desire to sing more often than you do, but the opportunities seem limited. Or maybe, you would just like to expand, branch out and sing to different audiences. Is it important to set goals and make plans for changes to take place in your ministry? Based on God’s Word, I believe there’s nothing wrong with setting goals. Just make sure you set them prayerfully.

In Jeremiah 29:11, God says, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (ESV) We always want to pursue His plans. We need to cooperate with them. Proverbs 19:21 says, “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” (ESV) There, it is right there! The powerful truth we need to take in. We can spend so much time building our own plans for our music ministry, but only God’s purposes and plans will stand. His plans are the best.

So, as you grow in your music ministry, keep this truth in mind. Commit your ministry to the Lord, and ask Him to bring before you all that He wants you to do. Be available and keep your eyes open to the opportunities that He sends. Let’s all be goal-setters and make it ours to follow God’s plan. You can trust that He will bring before you all that He wants you to do.
